The festival Open Roads: New Italian Cinema 2017 returns to Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theatre for its 17th edition. With a rich variety of this year’s Italian films, the festival offers a chance for the American public to experience the latest aesthetic trends of contemporary Italian cinema. We, here at i-Italy, had the chance to interview a few directors who presented some of the most original and controversial films.

Open Roads: New Italian Cinema 2017, il festival che da ormai diciassette anni offre l’occasione al pubblico americano di sperimentare le ultime tendenze estetiche del cinema italiano contemporaneo è tornato a New York al Walter Reade Theatre del Lincoln Center con una ricca e variegata selezione dei film italiani più rappresentativi di questa annata. Based on his novel Il trono vuoto (The Vacant Throne), Roberto Andò’s film Viva la libertà appeared last year in Italy at a propitious moment, just as Florence mayor Matteo Renzi stormed to national political prominence and assumed the office of prime minister (the youngest in Italian history) in early 2014. Both the film and the reality deal with a moment of crisis of the left; but perhaps that is where the similarities end.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center welcomes the 13th edition of Open Roads: New Italian Cinema (June 5-12). The festival is recognized as the leading North American showcase of contemporary Italian cinema, and this summer's edition is going to be exceptionally strong and diverse
