Art In Italy: Autum and Winter 2007

This Autumn Italy offers an increadible number of magnificent artistic exhibitions. Many masterpieces are coming from the most important museums and institutions not only from Italy, but also from other European, American and Middle Eastern countries.


Among all the opportunities a country like Italy offers to Art lovers, the following are all the major artistic events organized around the country, city-by-city in alphabetical order:

Belluno

Palazzo Crepadona: Titian - The Last Act

This interesting show is a divided in two parts and also takes place in the wonderful Palazzo della Magnifica Comunita' di Cadore, right in Titian's home town of Pieve di Cadore. It encompasses Titian’s final career with about 100 pieces in display. The pieces come from all over the world, including leading museums and private collections. The exhibition will be open until January 6.

Bergamno

Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (GAMeC): The Future of Futurism

A tribute to Italian Futurism, it features around 200 works by more than a hundred, including masterpieces from Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carra', Gino Severini and Mario Sironi. Open until February 24.

Florence

BoboliGarden: Gardens of the Ancient World

An early and excellent example of gardens from the 17th century, Boboli is at the center of an exhibition that encompasses early concepts of gardening, including the ancient Mesopotamian world and the Roman Empire. More than 150 archaeological finds loaned from the Italian government and leading institutes from all over the world are presented to the general public. The event takes place at the suggestive garden's “Limonaia” until October 28.

Mantua

San Giorgio Castle, Palazzo Ducale: Lucio Fontana Retrospective

Sculptures, drawings and preparatory sketches by the founder of Italy's well-known Spatialist movement. Open until January 6.

Naples

MADREContemporaryArt Museum: Piero Manzoni

Exhibition of works by the creator of 'Artist's Shit'. Open until September 24.

Possagno

Gipsoteca Canoviana Museum: Canova's Home – Cupid

The great return to Italy after more than two centuries of the portrayal of Prince Henryk Lubomirsky of Poland as the god of love. His mastewrpiece is the center of an event that is a tribute to the 250th anniversary of Antonio Canova's birth, held in the area where the magnificent artist was born and lies today. Open until November 1.

Ravenna

Church of San Domenico: Mosaics of the East, Tiles on the Road to Damascus

Thanks to a loan from Syrian museums, the Italian capital of Byzantine mosaics is holding a fantastic exhibition focused on the times when Syria was part of the Roman Empire. Open until November 5.

Rome

Colosseum: In Scaena

An interesting exhibition of a number of ancient Roman objects from different Italian museums. Open until February 18.

Villa Borghese

Part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of Antonio Canova's birth, this exhibition will put near Pauline Bonaparte’s statue other works from the Italian sculptor, including the marvellous “The Three Graces”, “Love and Psyche” and other masterpieces from all over the world. Open until February 3.

Tivoli

Hadrian's Villa

A celebration of the return to Italy of a famous statue of Vibia Sabina, Emperor Hadrian’s wife, from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts recently returned to Italy, this exhibition is enriched by the suggestive place where it is held. Open until November 4.

Trento

Castello del Buonconsiglio: Gold of the Riders of the Steppes

A collection of gold objects from Ukranian nomadic civilizations. Open until November 4.

Trieste

Salone degli Incanti

Wonderful exhibition on Marcello Mascherini that aims to compare his art to that of other European contemporaries Open until October 14.

RevoltellaMuseum: Felice Casorati – Painting Silence

An exhibition of works from different museums and instituions around the world. Open until November 4.

Venice

Palazzo Ducale: Venice And Islam

Precious works that shows all the historical influence between Venetian and Islamic cultures. Open until November 28.

Volterra

Palazzo dei Priori: The Etruscans At Volterra, Masterpieces From Great European Museums

A once-in-a-lifetime reunion of major Etruscan masterpieces, including loans from Italian and major European museums. Open until January 8.
