Much of what I think about Piero Bassetti’s notion of Italici and the term’s relationship to his equally innovative notion of the Glocal, appears in my introduction to his new book "Let’s Wake Up Italics! Manifesto for a Glocal Future," published by Bordighera Press. What follows is what I feel about this interesting idea.
  • On Monday, October 6, the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute hosted the symposium between the university institutions of Queens College (CUNY) and University of Calabria. An agreement of great significance was signed to promote of an educational program on Italian American studies at the Calabrian university. “We don’t want to assimilate the two cultures, but rather integrate them”
  • Federica Mogherini, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, meets mayor Bill de Blasio at City Hall. The New York mayor clearly proclaims his Italian-ness in an open and proud manner by kicking off the meeting speaking Italian. Minister Mogherini underscore responds: " Italy is a superpower in terms of presence around the world, and we need to empower this huge resource we have. Building bridges with a strong leader like you in this part of the world is part of that process"
  • New York is the most “Italian” city in the US. Adding together Americans of Italian descent and Italian citizens living here, the metropolitan area is home to almost four million Italians—which is among the largest concentration in the world after Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Milan, and Rome. This translates into a most robust cultural presence that has its points of reference in a handful of excellent institutions dealing with the Italian and Italian-American experience. In the first of a series, we asked the Dean of the Calandra Institute to describe who they are, what their mission is, and to talk about their many activities.
