Open Roads: New Italian Cinema
The Film Society of Lincoln Center will showcase the best in contemporary Italian film with the ninth edition of its annual Open Roads: New Italian Cinema series, screening at the Walter Reade Theater from Thursday, June 4 through Thursday, June 11. Featuring all films in their North American, U.S. or New York premieres, the series will welcome directors Alessandro Baricco, Marco Amenta, Maria Sole Tognazzi, Dino Gentili, Mimmo Calopresti, Ursula Ferrara, actors Silvio Orlando, Donatella Finocchiaro, Filippo Timi and others to the Film Society.
One of the tent poles of The Film Society’s calendar, Open Roads has helped bring new Italian cinema back to the forefront – international prize-winners Matteo Garrone (Gomorrah – a selection of last year’s New York Film Festival) and Paolo Sorrentino (Il Divo – currently in theatrical release) are both alumni of Film Society programs. This year’s edition opens on June 4th with Edoardo Winspeare’s Brave Men (also screening on Fri, Jun 5 & Sat, Jun 6), a tantalizing blend of melodrama and investigative cinema, firmly built on the rare figure of the female crime boss (Donatella Finocchiaro) and costarring Fabrizio Gifuni, an Open Roads favorite (The Sweet and the Bitter, Ms. F and The Girl by the Lake, all OR 2008). Winspeare premiered his previous two films,The Miracle at Open Roads 2004 and Live Blood in 2001, the inaugural edition of the festival.
