    31mo Gala Italia. Per una vita e carriera dedicata al cibo e al vino

    Il GALA ITALIA, impegnativa e prestigiosa manifestazione rivolta a personalità che hanno dedicato la loro vita  e la loro carriera al cibo e al vino, ha avuto quest'anno un riscontro senza precedenti.

    Lucio Caputo, presidente dell’Italian Wine & Food Institute, nel suo benvenuto agli ospiti, hamesso in risalto soprattutto il successo conquistato dal vino italiano negli Stati Uniti con oltre 3,5 milioni di ettolitri per un valore di 1,5 miliardi di dollari esportati negli Stati Uniti nel 2015.

    Il GALA ITALIA, composto da una degustazione di alcuni dei vini delle principali case italiane (quelle che riscuotono maggior notorieta' sul mercato americano) e da una Cena di Gala con ben nove grandissimi vini accoppiati ad un menu' di cinque portate.

    Un menu'  appositamente studiato per dare il massimo risalto ai vini e che ha visto la premiazione di alcune delle personalità che hanno maggiormente contribuito all’affermazione dei vini italiani. 

    A ricevere il Wine Leader Awards, fra gli applausi degli oltre trecento ospiti che gremivano l’elegante Ballroom del Pierre Hotel, Adam Strum, editore e direttore del Wine Enthusiast, che dopo il viaggio a Verona con Caputo per visitare il Vinitaly ( negli anni ottanta) ha scoperto il vino italiano al quale ha poi sempre dato risalto. 

    A seguire John Mariani, il notissimo giornalista ed autore di libri di grande successo, fra i quali “How Italian Food Conquered the World”; Florence Fabricant,  famosa giornalista del New York Times nonché icona del giornalismo americano eMary Ewing Mulligan MW, direttrice dell’International Wine Center e la prima americana ad aver ottenuto  il titolo di Master of Wine. 

    Fra i ristoratori sono stati premiati Sirio Maccioni, che ha elevato la gastronomia italiana a livelli senza precedenti, e Fabio Granato che con Vittorio Assaf,ha portato la cucina e i vini italiani nel mondo.

    Nei loro interventi tutti i premiati hanno sottolineato come i vini italiani siano diventati parte del loro patrimonio e hanno ringraziato il presidente dell’IWFI per aver dato loro, negli anni, la possibilità di scoprirli  ed apprezzarli. Particolarmente lusinghieri i commenti dell’ editore del Wine Enthusiast, Adam Strum.

    Il GALA ITALIA, strettamente riservato alla stampa settoriale americana, presente con tutte le più importanti testate dal Wine Spectator al Wine Enthusiast, ha visto tra le autorita' in sala il console Isabella Periotto.

    Oltre ai vini presentati al Wine & Food Tasting agli ospiti sono stati serviti, e brevemente illustrati, dai rappresentanti delle case appositamente venuti a New York,  nove vini di altissimo livello.

    Nell’ordine il Ferrari, Riserva Lunelli, Trento DOC, 2006,  il Planeta, Chardonnay, Sicilia IGT, 2014, il Tenuta Santa Caterina, Silente delle Marne, Monferrato Bianco DOC 2013, il Marchesi Antinori, Villa Antinori Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva, 2011, il Tenute Lunelli, Carapace, Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, 2008, il Condè, Sangiovese di Romagna DOC Riserva, 2008, il Mezzacorona, NOS Teroldego Rotaliano DOC Riserva, 2007, il Bertani, Villa Arvedi, Amarone della Valpolicella Valpantena DOCG, 2012 e il Sorrentino, Fior di Ginestre, Passito IGT Pompeiano, 2011. 

    Per il GALA ITALIA sono stati utilizzati 3.000 bicchieri della Luigi Bormioli di Parma disposti sui tavoli in apposite “Glass Mats” e illuminati da tante candeline davano un bellissimo aspetto al grande salone ed ancor maggior risalto ai vini. 

    La cena è stata intervallata da una presentazione di moda maschile della casa Eredi Pisano di Roma che,  grazie alle sue eleganti confezioni di altissimo livello, sta avendo grande riscontro sul mercato americano.

    A sottolineare l’importanza del GALA ITALIA - la manifestazione di più lunga durata al mondo (escluse le fiere) - il Sindaco di New York, Bill de Blasio (era presente il Commissioner Daniel Nigro) ha voluto inviare un suo personale messaggio rivolgendo il suo “mille grazie” e le sue congratulazioni all’Italian Wine & Food Institute, alle aziende partecipanti, ai giornalisti presenti ed alle prestigiose personalità  premiate. 

    Per il GALA ITALIA è stato predisposto un elegante programma a colori nel quale sono state fornite tutte le informazioni sulla manifestazione.

    Il GALA ITALIA è stato organizzato dall’IWFI, sotto l'alto patronato dell'ambasciatore italiano a Washington, e con il patrocinio del Ministero per lo Sviluppo Economico e di ICE Agenzia.

    New Documents on the Deportation of the Jews of Rhodes


     On January 29, 2015, at 6 pm Centro Primo Levi with the John Calandra Italian American Institute at CUNY will present a lecture and discussion with Marco Clementi, University of Calabria entitled New Documents on the Deportation of the Jews of Rhodes. The Discovery of the Carabinieri Collection in the Dodecanese State Archive. The program will take place at the Calandra Institute, 25 W 43rd St 17th fl., NYC. Admission is free.

     
    Dr. Clementi will present the first results of the survey conducted on the records of the special bureau of the Italian Carabinieri in Rhodes (today Greece, between 1912 and 1946 Italy).
     
    The archive was unexpectedly discovered in 2011 and identified in 2013. It is now being catalogued through a joint project of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Greek State Archive. The special bureau was a political surveillance office that, between 1932 and 1945, collected information on individuals, businesses, ethnic groups, spies, important events and political personalities. The records, which were thought to be lost, had remained for 66 years in the room where the Carabinieri had left them in 1945.
     
    A high number of these 100,000 files concern the local Jewish community in Rhodes, following the creation of the central governing body of the Italian Jewish communities (UCII) in 1931, to the deportation of July 1944. The Carabinieri recorded information on their lives, business, communal networks, political views and personal behaviors. Their story can now be re-examined under new light based on a much broader evidence of their interactions with the Italian authorities. The documents of the Central Special Bureau are currently been catalogued and digitized by the Greek State Archives and with the support of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
     
    Marco Clementi (University of Calabria) received a PhD in Contemporary History from the University of St. Petersburg and holds a degree in Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures from the University "La Sapienza" in Rome. His publications include Storia del dissenso sovietico (2007), L'Alleato Stalin (2011), Camicie Nere sull'Acropoli (2013). He is a member of the St. Petersburg Memorial’s scientific council.
     
    Centro Primo Levi is the recipient of an endowment of the Viterbi Family Foundation in memory of Achille and Maria Viterbi. Programs are made possible through the generous support of the Cahnman Foundation and Claude Ghez.

    "San Francesco a New York"

    "Frate Francesco: tracce, parole, immagini"; questo è il titolo della mostra che si terrà dal 17 al 28 novembre presso la sede ONU di New York e al Brooklyn Borough Hall dal 2 dicembre 2014 al 14 gennaio 2015 di New York.

     

    E' la prima volta che manoscritti del XIII e XIV secolo e Bolle Papali, riguardanti il Santo di Assisi, vengono negli Stati Uniti . La prima prestigiosa tappa è al  "palazzo di vetro". La mostra è composta da ben 19 opere proveniente dal Fondo Antico della Biblioteca comunale di Assisi presso la Biblioteca del Sacro Convento di Assisi.

    L'esclusiva e unica mostra dedicata a San Francesco prenderà il via lunedì 17 novembre alle 18.30 alla presenza di un comitato d'onore.
     

    Il cuore dell'esposizione sarà il Codice 338, raccolta dei primi scritti e documenti relativi a san Francesco e all'Ordine dei Frati Minori, contenente il Cantico delle Creature, il vero punto di partenza della letteratura italiana. Ogni anno la basilica di san Francesco è visitata da circa 6 milioni di turisti di cui il 40% americani. Questo fa capire l'attenzione verso la spiritualità francescana che è nuovamente punto di riferimento e modello, grazie anche soprattutto a Papa Francesco che attualizza il messaggio del Santo di Assisi. Con questa mostra si vuole far conoscere e approfondire la figura di Francesco d'Assisi, conosciuto nel mondo come uomo e santo della gente, della pace e della fraternità.
     

     L'esposizione"Frate Francesco: Tracce, Parole, Immagini" è suddivisa in tre sezioni:
     

    -Nella prima, Tracce, sono esposti i documenti che più da vicino testimoniano la vicenda storica del santo. Assolutamente fondamentale la presenza, quindi, del Codice 338: una miscellanea che contiene la più antica copia esistente degli scritti del Santo di Assisi: risale al XIII secolo e conserva, tra gli altri, i 12 capitoli della Regula fratrum minorum (1223) approvata nel 1223 da Papa Onorio III, con la quale Francesco diede ai frati della comunità un indirizzo spirituale e la serie di norme pratiche destinate a regolare la loro vita quotidiana. Sempre nel Manoscritto 338 sono contenute le Laudes creaturarum, più conosciute come Il Cantico delle Creature, considerato la prima opera in volgare antico e riconosciuto, sin dal Settecento, come il testo poetico più antico della letteratura italiana. Completano la prima sezione alcune Bolle Papali, tra cui una del 1220 che testimonia per la prima volta il nome del santo in un documento ufficiale.

    -Nella seconda sezione, Parole, sono esposte le più antiche biografie del santo, tra cui alcuni rari codici: un frammento della Vita beati Francisci di Tommaso da Celano, la più antica opera dedicata a san Francesco; il rarissimo Memoriale in desiderio animae o Vita Seconda del 1247; la Legenda Maior e la Legenda Minor di Bonaventura da Bagnoregio, in copie dell’inizio del XIV secolo; i Fioretti di san Francesco, la più celebre raccolta agiografica francescana in lingua volgare, caratterizzata da una immagine idealizzata e “popolare” del Santo, ancora oggi diffusa in numerosissime lingue.

    - Nella terza sezione, Immagini, abbiamo una selezione di codici miniati nei quali è raffigurato il Santo di Assisi: tra cui un antifonario, un breviario francescano, un messale e laBibbia di Giovanni da Parma.Dalle parole che narrano le vicende di Frate Francesco si passa dunque alle immagini che intendono celebrarne la santità, documenti visuali in cui il compito di “volgarizzare” e diffondere la fisionomia spirituale del Santo è affidato al linguaggio della bellezza.
