A group of Italian language experts gathered at Montclair State University in New Jersey to discuss prospects regarding the study of the language and how it fares against the study of other languages. Guest speakers included Dennis Looney of the Modern Language Association, David Ward of Wellesley College, and Lucia Pasqualini from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Rome.

Now, effective this past September 1, Anthony Julian Tamburri, Dean of the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute is a CUNY Distinguished Professor. The status is conferred by the City University of New York Board of Trustees in recognition of special scholarship merits and commitment to teaching. Tamburri is Queens College’s 15th distinguished professor, and the first in his department, European Languages and Literatures, to achieve this title.

Over the past forty years, from high-school teaching to the university, and into the community, working within Italian Studies has had it challenges, to be sure. In spite of the grandeurs of Italian culture over the past 800-plus years, it seems that we often find ourselves in an up-hill battle.
