  • Three Italian films were nominated for the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival, an annual international film festival held in Cannes, France. It will run from May 13th to May 24th this year. The directors are Giovanni "Nanni" Moretti, Paolo Sorrentino, and Matteo Garrone.
  • The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) has decided to create a new grant in order to support the ongoing “Save the Saint” restoration process, which aims to restore the Duomo of Milan and its 135 spires, including the one featuring Saint Francesca Cabrini, the first ever American citizen to be officially made a Saint by the Catholic Church. As a naturalized US citizen, the figure of Mother Cabrini is very significant to all Italian Americans.
  • Spring is busting out all over Italy, but the political climate remains deep winter. Premier Matteo Renzi, whose popularity had been robust at almost 40% in January, is watching his once firm grip on politics slip to today’s 33%. Meanwhile the stormy problems facing his government – public works, migrants, election rules – would challenge any leader anywhere.
  • On April 6, ten thousand braved the cold in L’Aquila to record the sixth anniversary of the earthquake that struck the beautiful medieval city in the Abruzzo, killing 309, leaving up to 70,000 homeless and damaging tens of thousands of historic buildings. Reconstruction has been controversial, but, “After too many promises, we are finally passing to action,” Premier Matteo Renzi said Monday.
  • On April 8th, the Westchester Italian Cultural Center will welcome Fred Gardaphe, Distinguished Professor of English and Italian American Studies John D. Calandra Italian American Institute, to participate in the panel In The Name of the Father and The Son: Italians Migrations in the art of Joseph and William Papaleo. Professor Gardaphe will analyze the relationship between Joseph and William Papaleo, father and son, respectively a writer and painter. Comparing two generations, which, through their own artistic perspective, have both touched upon the themes of emigration - immigration.

    The centuries-old plant originating in the Mediterranean has been succesfully exported to other parts of the world, but 90% of olive oil is still produced on its home turf. Second only to Spain in production is Italy. 2014-2015 was a bad harvest year for both countries, due to weather conditions, causing a collapse in olive oil production worldwide. Consumers should therefore be careful and learn how to recognize quality oil.
  • Reading is waning in Italy as elsewhere, and the number of those saying they had read at least one book in the past year dropped from 43% in 2013 to 41.4% in the year 2014. But still they read, and even as Italy celebrates the 90th birthday of its famous Encyclopedia Treccani an amusing website collects details of what commuters are reading these days on trains.
  • Pizza makers from the Pizzeria Brandi in Naples designed a pizza to celebrate the Expo in Milan, to go with the theme "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life." Pizza is the perfect choice, because it is an iconic food that reminds consumers of the importance of Italian agriculture. Pizzeria Brandi is also supposedly the place where Italy’s iconic margherita pizza was first created. Originally, pizza was known as a dish for poor people, sold in the street. The story goes that in June of 1889, to honor the Queen of the consort of Italy, Margherita of Savoy, the Neapolitan pizza maker Raffaele Esposito created “Pizza Margherita.

    After six years of work and planning, EXPO 2015 opens in Milan in less than five weeks, and you can almost hear the organizers’ sighs of relief as work on the pavilions is being completed, and the goal of selling 10 million tickets before its official opening May 1 looms within sight. Organizers of this ambitious world’s fair on the theme “Nourish the Planet, Energy for Life” report that distributors, travel agencies worldwide and on-line booking agencies have already acquired 8.5 million tickets.
