  • Immigration is decreasing in Italy for the first time (-3.2% from last year) after a period of constant increase between 2014 and 2017, while the number of Italians leaving the country is on the rise (+1,9%) according to the latest report on immigration by national statistics agency ISTAT.
  • Italians in the World Report for 2018 by the Migrantes Foundation reveals that the number of people leaving Italy continues to grow: Italian mobility increased by 2.7% between 2017 and 2018 and by 64.7% since 2006. But, more importantly, it goes into detail to examine who is leaving, where they are leaving from, where they are going and why.

  • Italy's newest hero is Capt. Francesco Iavazzo, whose quick thinking and efficient crewmen saved the lives of literally hundreds of migrants whose shabby boat with 600 aboard capsized off the Libyan coast. "At sea, safeguarding human life is a sacred task," said Capt. Iavazzo.
  • On April 8th, the Westchester Italian Cultural Center will welcome Fred Gardaphe, Distinguished Professor of English and Italian American Studies John D. Calandra Italian American Institute, to participate in the panel In The Name of the Father and The Son: Italians Migrations in the art of Joseph and William Papaleo. Professor Gardaphe will analyze the relationship between Joseph and William Papaleo, father and son, respectively a writer and painter. Comparing two generations, which, through their own artistic perspective, have both touched upon the themes of emigration - immigration.
  • Elena Perazzini interviewed more than 30 Italians before deciding on seven for her book, 'Via da Noi, Away from Us’. She chronicled their journeys starting from their initial decision to leave Italy to their triumphs and frustrations once arrived on American soil. In addition to their fascinating and poignant tales, these characters bring another layer to the complex character of America – expectation and preconception.
  • Trevignano is a small town north of Rome with a surprisingly big cinema tradition dating back to the Thirties. This Sept. 25-29 it hosted a five-day festival of documentary and fiction films from around the world dedicated to the problems of migrants. Organized by journalist Corrado Giustiniani with the participation of actors Carlo Verdone and Monica Guerritore, the Trevignano Film Festival was timed to honor the first anniversary of the drowning of some 360 migrants Oct. 3, 2013, off the coast of Lampedusa.
  • Italian emigration to the U.S. was fairly limited until 1870 and unification of Italy, but by 1900 the figure had risen to over 400,000, and in the decade after 1900 over 2,100,000 arrived. Today nearly 18 million Americans can claim Italian descent, or about 6% of the U.S. population. By 1910 New York City alone was already home to 472,000 Italians.
